Communicating Research Impact
Accelerating Research Translation (ART) Workshop #3
Friday, February 19, 2027 • 12:00-2:00 p.m. CT
Prior to this workshop, participants will complete structured pre-work designed to jumpstart the development of a personalized research communication plan, identifying their key audiences including funders, policymakers, industry partners, and community stakeholders, and reflecting on how their current messaging lands with each research plan. This session strengthens researchers' abilities to communicate the significance and outcomes of their work to diverse audiences. The workshop reflects VentureWell's emphasis on storytelling and impact communication as drivers of funding success and public engagement, and responds directly to the University of Southern Mississippi's qualitative findings that communication around the value and societal impact of TRA is consistently missed. We will cover research impact storytelling techniques, audience-centered communication strategies, translating technical research for non-academic audiences, communicating societal and economic outcomes, and public engagement and dissemination strategies.
Audience: Faculty, students, research staff
Learning objectives:
- Craft audience-centered research narratives that clearly communicate the societal and economic impact of their work to diverse stakeholders including funders, policymakers, and community partners
- Apply storytelling guidelines to develop compelling grant narratives and public-facing messaging that elevate the visibility and translational value of their research
